Guy Edwin Sheek and Mary Grant — Pleasant Valley Cemetery Restoration Project
Preserving a Historic Gravestone and Honouring Two Lives
The South Stormont Cemetery Preservation Association is supporting an important heritage restoration project at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in South Stormont, Ontario.
The project involves the preservation and reconstruction of the original gravestone of Guy Edwin Sheek (1802–1865) and the creation of a companion memorial honouring his wife, Mary Grant (1811–1899).
Guy Edwin Sheek served with the Cornwall Troop of Volunteer Cavalry during the Upper Canada Rebellions of 1838–1839. He died on April 20, 1865, following an accident involving a falling flagpole in New York State.
His historic gravestone was discovered lying in numerous broken pieces at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. The surviving fragments were carefully recovered, cleaned, and fitted together to determine the original appearance of the monument.
Working with Brunet Monuments in Cornwall, a restoration design has been developed to preserve the original stone fragments on a new granite support, with an inscription commemorating Mary Grant.
Fundraising Goal: $6,215
Community contributions are being sought to help finance the restoration and ensure that this important piece of local history is preserved for future generations.
